The 14th National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) held its 50th biweekly consultation session in Beijing on Oct 21. The session focused on strengthening chronic disease prevention and control.

Wang Huning, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and chairman of the CPPCC National Committee, presided over the session.

Wang said the session should align with the decisions of the fourth plenary session of the 20th CPC Central Committee and the outline of the 15th Five-Year Plan (2026-30), ensuring that policy suggestions are well-targeted and deliver tangible results.

Noting that public health is a key marker of national strength, he said building a Healthy China by 2035 is a strategic decision of the CPC Central Committee.

He called on the CPPCC to focus its research on key issues such as chronic disease trends and characteristics, treatment challenges, service systems and coordination mechanisms, and to report on relevant developments and put forward recommendations through inspections, field studies, proposals and public opinion reports. He also urged scientists and experts among CPPCC members to leverage their professional strengths and play a greater role in chronic disease prevention and control.

Participants stressed the importance of implementing the 15th Five-Year Plan's tasks on chronic disease prevention and control, developing full-chain services covering prevention, treatment, rehabilitation and management, and improving early screening, diagnosis and treatment systems.

They called for integrating prevention and treatment, channeling more quality medical resources to lower-level medical institutions, boosting diagnostic and treatment capacity, and increasing rehabilitation and nursing services.

They also stressed the need to step up basic research and original innovation in chronic disease prevention and treatment, expand the application of AI, accelerate the development of innovative drugs, and make society-wide efforts to foster healthier lifestyles and environments.

CPPCC National Committee vice-chairpersons Shen Yueyue, Zhou Qiang, Wang Dongfeng, Jiang Zuojun, Zhu Yongxin and Yang Zhen attended the session.

Officials from the National Development and Reform Commission, the National Health Commission and the National Healthcare Security Administration gave briefings at the session and exchanged views with CPPCC members.
