The 14th National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) held its 45th biweekly consultative meeting in Beijing on June 17 on tapping the potential of the sports industry to boost consumption.

Wang Huning, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee and chairman of the CPPCC National Committee, presided over the meeting.

Wang said that since the 18th CPC National Congress in 2012, the CPC Central Committee has accelerated efforts to build a sports powerhouse and a Healthy China. The national fitness strategy has been implemented in depth, mass sports and competitive sports have flourished, and the sports industry has expanded rapidly, achieving major progress in the country's sports endeavors, according to Wang.

Wang underscored that the CPPCC National Committee should focus on promoting high-quality development of the sports industry and conduct in-depth research on various key issues, such as understanding the evolving trends and characteristics of demand for sports during the 15th Five-Year Plan period (2026-30), enriching product and service supply in line with the upgrading needs of the sports industry, stimulating sports consumption demand in response to evolving consumer preferences, and improving policy mechanisms to optimize the sports consumption environment.

CPPCC members should carry out inspections, surveys, collect information on social conditions and public opinion, and make proposals concerning these issues to reflect realities and put forward suggestions, Wang said. He also urged CPPCC members who are experts, scholars, entrepreneurs, and athletes to make use of their respective positions and professional strengths to play a greater role in fully tapping the potential of the sports industry and boosting consumption.

Eleven CPPCC National Committee members delivered speeches at the meeting. They agreed that it is essential to implement the goals and tasks for building a sports powerhouse during the 15th Five-Year Plan period, vigorously develop the sports event economy, establish a multi-tiered competition system encompassing a wide range of sports, and promote high-quality development of the sports industry.

It is also necessary to advance capacity expansion and quality improvement in sports services and innovation-driven upgrading in sports manufacturing, deepen the integrated development of commerce, tourism, culture, sports and health, diversify differentiated and personalized sports products and services, foster the growth of Chinese sports brands and unlock the vitality of sports consumption, they added.

Vice-chairpersons of the CPPCC National Committee Hu Chunhua, Shen Yueyue, Su Hui, Mu Hong, Wang Dongfeng, and Yang Zhen attended the meeting. Officials from the National Development and Reform Commission, the Ministry of Commerce, and the General Administration of Sport introduced related developments and engaged in consultations and exchanges with CPPCC members.
