Yang Zhen, vice-chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) and executive vice-chairman of the Central Committee of the Chinese Peasants and Workers Democratic Party, led a team to Southwest China's Sichuan province from July 27 to 30 to carry out supervision of the handling of a key proposal on strengthening the comprehensive prevention and control of chronic diseases.

The team visited hospitals, primary healthcare institutions, research organizations, urban communities and rural areas in Mianyang and Chengdu. They learned about Sichuan's efforts, achievements and challenges in chronic disease prevention and control, and held discussions with local government officials, medical workers and community representatives to solicit opinions and suggestions. During the survey, the team also carried out a public service activity as part of the CPPCC National Committee's "serving the people" initiative.

The team stressed the importance of carrying out the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee's decisions and plans on chronic disease prevention and control, as well as the relevant tasks in the outline of the 15th Five-Year Plan (2026-30).

They called for adhering to a prevention-first approach, strengthening public health protection, enhancing overall coordination, and improving the quality and efficiency of healthcare services.

Efforts should also be made to deepen research on key and difficult issues in chronic disease prevention and control, reinforce the health-first development strategy, improve joint prevention and control mechanisms, standardize chronic disease management, and make better use of science and technology to support prevention and control efforts.

The team noted that the CPPCC should give full play to its role as a specialized consultative body, continue conducting in-depth research on major issues concerning chronic disease prevention and control, and put forward practical and targeted policy recommendations.

Officials from relevant special committees of the CPPCC National Committee, CPPCC National Committee members and representatives from the National Health Commission participated in the survey. Local CPPCC officials joined related activities.
