The National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) held a symposium on China's macroeconomic performance in the first half of 2026 on July 16.

Wang Yong, vice-chairman of the CPPCC National Committee, chaired the meeting and delivered a speech. Gao Yunlong, vice-chairman of the CPPCC National Committee, attended the meeting.

Officials from the National Bureau of Statistics briefed participants on the country's economic performance in the first half of this year. The National Development and Reform Commission provided a written briefing on relevant policy measures, followed by interactive discussions among participants.

Ten CPPCC National Committee members, together with one scholar, delivered speeches. Participants said that China's economy withstood pressure and operated within a reasonable range in the first half of the year. Production and supply expanded steadily, employment and prices remained generally stable, foreign trade maintained sound momentum, new growth drivers developed rapidly, measures to safeguard people's well-being delivered tangible results, and the economy demonstrated sustained resilience.

They called for fully implementing the guiding principles of the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China (CPC), the plenary sessions of the 20th CPC Central Committee and the Central Economic Work Conference, and aligning thinking and actions with the decisions and plans of the CPC Central Committee to contribute wisdom and strength to ensuring a good start to the 15th Five-Year Plan (2026-30).

Participants suggested strengthening coordination of macroeconomic regulation, intensifying counter-cyclical and cross-cyclical policy adjustments, and consolidating the momentum of steady economic recovery.

They said efforts should be made to expand effective investment and boost domestic demand, advance the development of six major networks (water, new-type power grids, computing power, next-generation communications, urban underground pipelines, and logistics), implement targeted measures to stimulate consumption, fully unleash the potential of China's vast domestic market, and accelerate the development of a strong domestic market.

They further stressed the importance of pursuing innovation-driven industrial upgrading, promoting deeper integration of scientific and technological innovation with industrial innovation, accelerating the development of a modern industrial system centered on new quality productive forces, and ensuring an orderly transition from traditional to new growth drivers.

Participants also emphasized the need to adopt a bottom-line approach, better coordinate development and security, steadily defuse risks in key areas, and strengthen safeguards for economic security.

Officials from the General Office and the Committee on Economic Affairs of the CPPCC National Committee, together with a number of CPPCC National Committee members, attended the meeting.
