The 16th meeting of the Standing Committee of the 17th Central Committee of the Chinese Peasants and Workers Democratic Party (CPWDP) was held on July 7 and 8 in Hohhot, North China's Inner Mongolia autonomous region.

The meeting reviewed the work of the Standing Committee of the CPWDP Central Committee in the first half of the year, made arrangements for key tasks in the second half and deliberated on and adopted documents concerning the upcoming leadership transition of CPWDP provincial organizations in 2027.

He Wei, vice-chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress and chairman of the CPWDP Central Committee, attended the meeting and delivered a speech. Yang Zhen, vice-chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference and executive vice-chairman of the CPWDP Central Committee, presided over the opening session and spoke at the closing session.

He noted that since the beginning of this year, the CPWDP Central Committee has united and led organizations at all levels in solidly fulfilling the three basic tasks of the CPWDP on the new journey in the new era. It has diligently implemented the 2026 work priorities and work plans of its Standing Committee, steadily improving the quality and effectiveness of policy recommendations and proposals, democratic oversight and social services, He said. These efforts have laid a solid foundation for successfully completing the annual tasks related to political development, performance of duties and self-development, He added.

He urged the organization to further advance the education campaign of participating in governance for the public good and working diligently for the people in a practical and thorough manner while strengthening ideological and political development.

Regarding the democratic oversight on the ecological protection and high-quality development of the Yellow River Basin, he stressed the need to draw on successful experiences and effective practices of the previous two rounds of democratic oversight and to take into account new tasks and requirements. The CPWDP must consistently uphold the leadership of the Communist Party of China, adhere to a problem-oriented approach and systematic thinking, accurately grasp the nature and positioning, key focuses and objectives of democratic oversight, work in the same direction to jointly address the issues and contribute to the implementation of the national strategy, he said.

He further called for upholding a sound approach to selecting and appointing officials, and advancing the leadership transition of provincial-level organizations with high standards and strict requirements.
