The 14th National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) held its 35th briefing session on issues of major concern in Beijing on June 25, focusing on developing mass sports events. Zhu Yongxin, vice-chairman of the CPPCC National Committee, attended the session.

Cui Jian, deputy director of the General Administration of Sport, said in his briefing that public enthusiasm for fitness has surged in recent years, providing sustained momentum for the development of national fitness programs. Adhering to a people-centered approach and prioritizing safety, the General Administration of Sport has taken multiple measures to ensure mass sports events are organized safely and in an orderly manner, he said.

Cui noted that the administration will further enrich event offerings, cultivate flagship events, enhance industry governance, strengthen risk prevention and mitigation and tighten safety oversight. These measures would upgrade the quality of mass sports events, thereby enriching the public’s cultural and spiritual life with vibrant sporting energy, he said.

Liu Sushe, vice-minister of culture and tourism, said in his briefing that the ministry places high importance on integrating culture, sports and tourism. It has consistently strengthened policy support and guidance, promoted the joint development of mass cultural activities and sports events, and advanced the integrated development of intangible cultural heritage and sports, he noted. The ministry has also expanded the supply of cultural, sports, and tourism products, unlocked consumption potential, and empowered sports events with distinctive cultural features, he said.

In the future, the ministry will refine supportive policies to effectively integrate mass sports events with cultural and tourism activities, roll out premium products integrating events with tourism and public-benefit initiatives, and intensify the promotion of cultural and tourism resources, so that culture, tourism, and sports events reinforce one another and thrive together.

During the session, CPPCC members engaged in discussions and raised questions on topics including deepening the integration of culture, sports, and tourism to drive growth in both consumption and income, establishing a comprehensive benefit evaluation mechanism for mass sports events, improving health risk prevention and control systems for such events and creating signature sports event brands tailored to local conditions.
