The office for the study and promotion of Peking Opera and Kunqu Opera (Jingkun Office) of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) held a lecture themed "Peking Opera — A Treasure of Chinese Culture" on June 11.

Jiang Xinzhi, vice-chairman of the CPPCC National Committee and director of the office, attended the event. Han Dongmei, vice-secretary-general of the CPPCC National Committee and executive deputy director of the office, presided over the lecture.

The lecture was delivered by Wang Yong, a member of the CPPCC National Committee, deputy director of the Jingkun Office, and president of the National Peking Opera Company. Centered on promoting the prosperity and development of Peking Opera, Wang systematically expounded on Peking Opera's aesthetic characteristics, role categories, and performative functions, highlighting the art form's profound intellectual value and enduring artistic appeal as a national treasure.

Young performers from the National Peking Opera Company gave live demonstrations of many classic excerpts, vividly showcasing the exquisite stylized movements and the aesthetic essence of Peking Opera. The performance illustrated how traditional Chinese opera, as a vital vehicle for inheriting and developing fine traditional Chinese culture, plays an active role in stimulating the nation's cultural creativity and prospering socialist culture.

The venue was filled to capacity amid an enthusiastic atmosphere. Participants noted that the lecture, combining scholarly exposition with live performance, offered an in-depth yet accessible panorama of Peking Opera's profundity and its unique value in embodying Chinese aesthetic standards and moral values.

They expressed commitment to use traditional opera to pass on Chinese cultural heritage and promote the spirit of the times, and build broad consensus in support of a strong start to the 15th Five-Year Plan period (2026-30) and the advance of Chinese modernization.
