Shen Yueyue, vice-chairwoman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), led a team of CPPCC members to Fujian province from June 8 to 11 to conduct democratic oversight on optimizing the supply of basic elderly care services and improving the care system for the elderly with physical or cognitive impairment. They also conducted a themed survey on adapting to demographic changes and optimizing resource allocation in key sectors.
The team members visited cities such as Fuzhou, Zhangzhou and Xiamen, conducting on-site research of the elderly care service systems and resource allocation at urban and rural communities, social welfare institutes, senior health centers, hospitals and schools. They engaged in face-to-face exchanges with elderly residents and their families, grassroots officials and community workers.
During the tour, the members visited Gu Wenchang Memorial Hall as part of efforts to establish and practice a correct view of governance performance, learning from the noble spirit of serving and benefiting the people from Gu, who served as Party chief of Dongshan county in Fujian province in the 1950s. At the Fuzhou Social Welfare Institute, Liu Meilin, a member of the CPPCC National Committee, gave a lecture on the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular diseases for the elderly.
The members noted that it is essential to carry out consultative oversight while adhering to both goal- and problem-oriented approaches. Efforts should focus on identifying the difficulties and bottlenecks in caring for the elderly with physical or cognitive impairment, conducting in-depth inspections and reflecting on problems realistically to propose targeted, pragmatic and effective suggestions, they said.
