Wang Yong, vice-chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), led a team of CPPCC National Committee members to Gansu province from May 26 to 29. They conducted a survey on accelerating the building of a new energy system.
The team visited key enterprises, research institutions, project sites and industrial parks to inspect industrial development and the operation of major projects. They also solicited opinions and suggestions from all relevant stakeholders. The team members acknowledged that by leveraging its rich wind and solar resources, Gansu has been seizing the strategic opportunities presented by the ongoing energy transition. They also praised Gansu for concentrating efforts on building a nationally significant new energy and equipment manufacturing base and fostering new quality productive forces. Anchored in the development of a new energy system to drive industrial upgrading, the province has achieved sustained improvements in the quality and effectiveness of its development, they said.
The team members emphasized that energy security constitutes a cornerstone of national security, and that building a new energy system bears on the overall landscape of Chinese modernization. They called for a holistic approach to development and security. This includes making science-based plans for energy infrastructure, steadily advancing the green and low-carbon transformation of energy consumption, continuously refining market mechanisms for energy operations and laying solid foundations for building a strong energy nation.
The team members also underscored the need to establish and practice a sound understanding of governance performance, one grounded in long-term vision and pragmatic action, so as to promote the sustainable and healthy development of the energy sector.
They urged the CPPCC to continue to make use of its strengths as a specialized consultative body, conducting in-depth research on bottlenecks in building the new energy system, building consensus, and offering targeted, well-founded advice to help translate energy policies into tangible results and support a strong start to economic and social development during the 15th Five-Year Plan period (2026-30).
