Shen Yueyue, vice-chairperson of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), led a team to survey the efforts to build a new power system in East China's Jiangsu province from Jan 26 to 29.

The team conducted surveys in cities including Nanjing, Suzhou, and Nantong, where they visited energy and carbon management platforms, research institutes, innovation industrial parks, and power stations and plants. They carried out in-depth research on issues such as building a new power system dominated by renewable energy, ensuring power supply security, deepening institutional reforms in the power sector, and achieving breakthroughs in core technologies in key fields. The team also held symposia to hear reports on relevant situations.

A special lecture on carbon neutrality and green transition of the energy sector was delivered during the visit, along with public activities under the "serving the people" initiative.

The team stated that building a new power system is a crucial measure for achieving the goals of carbon peaking and carbon neutrality, promoting the comprehensive green transformation of economic and social development, and ensuring national energy security. It is essential to strengthen ideological and political guidance, actively carry out policy communication, build broad social consensus, and pool strong synergies for building China into an energy powerhouse, the team noted.

The team emphasized that as this year marks the beginning of the 15th Five-Year Plan (2026-30) period, it is essential to focus on the bottlenecks and challenges in building a new power system and conduct in-depth research. They said that it is crucial for the CPPCC National Committee to fully play its role as the country’s specialized consultative body, summarize local practical experiences and approaches, and leverage the strengths of its members to put forward scientific, targeted, practical, and actionable opinions and suggestions. This, they said, would contribute wisdom and strength to building a new power system and developing a new energy system.
