On Dec 2, Su Hui, vice-chairwoman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) and chairwoman of the Central Committee of the Taiwan Democratic Self-Government League, met with a visiting delegation of Taiwan public representatives headed by Chang Pen-tsao in Beijing.
Su noted that this year marks the 80th anniversary of the victory in the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression (1931-45) and the World Anti-Fascist War, as well as the 80th anniversary of Taiwan's restoration to China.
At this important moment linking the past and future, the delegation's visit is a concrete action to enhance mutual exchanges and promote integration across the Taiwan Strait, she said.
Su stressed that the Recommendations of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee for Formulating the 15th Five-Year Plan for Economic and Social Development, adopted at the fourth plenary session of the 20th CPC Central Committee, charted the strategic development blueprint for the next five years. It listed "promoting the peaceful development of cross-Strait relations and China's reunification" as a priority, providing more opportunities for Taiwan compatriots and enterprises, she said.
Su expressed the hope that the delegation would leverage its advantages to facilitate communication and encourage more compatriots and enterprises from Taiwan to develop on the Chinese mainland.
Su noted that "Taiwan independence" separatist forces seek to achieve their goal by relying on foreign interference or resorting to force, severely impairing cross-Strait peace and stability.
She called on remembering history and firmly opposing "Taiwan independence". The spirit of the Chinese nation and the spirit of the resistance against Japanese aggression should be carried forward, and the correct view on history, nation and country should be upheld in the effort to firmly grasp the destiny of the Chinese nation in our own hands, Su highlighted.
Chang underscored that non-governmental exchanges across the Strait should be kept as normal as ever in the face of complicated cross-Strait relations.
Chang expressed the hope that under this communication mechanism, the CPPCC and the delegation can give full play to their corresponding advantages so as to encourage more cross-Strait exchanges, promote cultural identity among compatriots across the Strait, and consolidate the foundation for the peaceful development of cross-Strait relations.
