A team from the Committee on Agriculture and Rural Areas of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) that was led by Hu Chunhua, vice-chairman of the CPPCC National Committee, conducted a survey in Northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region from Oct 9 to 13, focusing on consolidating the results of poverty alleviation and promoting long-term development of rural areas.

The team visited villages that had been lifted out of poverty, relocation sites for poverty alleviation, modern agricultural industrial parks and vocational training colleges in Hami city, the Bayingolin Mongolian autonomous prefecture and Hotan prefecture. They talked with local officials, residents, entrepreneurs and workers to gain a detailed understanding of local efforts in consolidating poverty alleviation achievements, preventing the return of poverty and promoting rural vitalization.

The team noted that Xinjiang has been committed to developing agriculture and rural areas as a priority, and that the income of the population that has got rid of poverty has increased and the areas shaking off poverty have seen a robust development.

The team said that large-scale poverty recurrence should be prevented by monitoring related factors, strengthening skills training and employment services, developing specialty industries in light of local conditions and promoting sustained income growth and high-quality development.

The CPPCC should give full play to its role in strengthening research, consultation and policy recommendations and should make active contributions to comprehensive rural vitalization, the team said. The team urged CPPCC members to fully tap their expertise, tell China’s story of poverty alleviation in the new era, and make efforts in uniting people, forming consensus, pooling wisdom and forging synergy for Chinese modernization.
