The 14th National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) held its 36th biweekly consultation meeting in Beijing on Sept 28. The meeting focused on promoting high-quality agricultural development with new quality productive forces.
Wang Huning, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee and chairman of the CPPCC National Committee, presided over the meeting.
Wang noted that, since the 18th CPC National Congress in 2012, the CPC Central Committee has prioritized work related to agriculture, rural areas and farmers, and has accelerated the advancement of agricultural scientific and technological innovation, industrial upgrading and green transformation, leading to a historic leap in China's agricultural productivity and taking solid steps in building an agricultural powerhouse.
He stressed that the CPPCC should thoroughly implement the CPC Central Committee's decisions and arrangements in this regard, conduct in-depth research and strengthen consultation and deliberation.
Wang called for in-depth research on key issues related to agricultural development, including planning the development of agriculture and rural areas during the 15th Five-Year Plan period (2026-30), promoting innovation in agricultural science and technology, developing modern agricultural industries, ensuring stable supplies of grain and major agricultural products, accelerating green and low-carbon development, advancing institutional reform of agricultural science and technology and enhancing international cooperation. He emphasized that the CPPCC should propose policy recommendations to support the implementation of relevant policies.
Wang also urged CPPCC members to widely publicize the achievements made in building China into a strong agricultural country in the new era and to actively take part in the CPPCC's "serving the people" initiative to mobilize broader social support for agricultural and rural development.
Nine members of the CPPCC National Committee and two specially invited representatives shared their views at the meeting. They emphasized deepening reforms in the agricultural science and technology system, strengthening innovation, and deepening integration between technological and industrial innovation as well as between small farmer households and modern agriculture.
They also stressed the importance of expanding financial support, fostering agri-tech enterprises as principle players in innovation and expanding application scenarios for artificial intelligence, data and low-altitude technologies, in order to drive future-oriented agricultural development.
CPPCC National Committee vice-chairpersons Hu Chunhua, Shen Yueyue, Wang Yong, Bater, Su Hui, Gao Yunlong, Mu Hong and Jiang Xinzhi attended the meeting. Senior officials from the National Development and Reform Commission, the Ministry of Science and Technology, and the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs provided briefings and engaged in discussions with CPPCC members.
