The China Committee on Religion and Peace (CCRP) held a symposium in Beijing on Sept 9 to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the victory in the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War. The event emphasized carrying forward patriotism and the great spirit of the war of resistance, in order to rally powerful strength for the realization of the rejuvenation of the Chinese nation.

Pagbalha Geleg Namgyai, vice-chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference and chairman of the CCRP, delivered a written speech. He urged CCRP members to have a thorough understanding of the rich connotations and contemporary significance of the spirit of the war of resistance, uphold the correct political direction, and strengthen confidence in development.

He called for transforming this spirit into the capacity and confidence to address challenges, guard against risks, overcome difficulties and resolve conflicts in the new era. He also stressed the need to further foster unity, consolidate consensus and draw wisdom and strength, while carrying forward the fine tradition of patriotism and love for religions and contributing to national rejuvenation through Chinese modernization. He called on the CCRP to build greater consensus on peace and development by telling China's stories — including those of Chinese religions — to the international community.

CCRP vice-chairpersons Yan Jue, Li Guangfu, Xu Xiaohong and Ma Zhongping, along with six committee members, delivered remarks. They reviewed historical contributions of China's religious communities to the nationwide resistance against Japanese aggression under the leadership of the Communist Party of China. They also voiced their firm commitment to upholding the principle that religions in China must be Chinese in orientation, promoting the fine tradition of patriotism and love for religions, and safeguarding world peace and development.
