BEIJING -- A symposium commemorating the 80th anniversary of the victory in the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War was held in Beijing on Tuesday, drawing 340 participants, including representatives of patriotic figures from all sectors of society from Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan and foreign countries.
Wang Huning, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, attended the symposium and delivered a speech.
The victory in the war against Japanese aggression was China's first complete triumph in modern times against foreign invasion, and it was a great victory achieved through the courageous struggle of all Chinese people, including compatriots from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan, as well as overseas Chinese, Wang said.
He said the victory stands as a shared memory of the Chinese nation and a shared honor of all Chinese people.
The motherland and its people will always remember the unique contributions made by compatriots from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan, as well as overseas Chinese, to the establishment of the international anti-fascist united front, Wang said.
He stressed that the commemoration of the war's victory should highlight its profound significance and demonstrate to the world the major contribution of the Eastern battlefield in the global fight against fascism.
Wang underscored the importance of carrying forward the great national spirit, with patriotism at its core, along with the great spirit of the war of resistance, in order to rally powerful strength for the realization of the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation.
He called for efforts to advance Chinese modernization in a comprehensive way, support and promote the integration of Hong Kong and Macao into the country's overall development, and improve the institutions and policies that facilitate economic and cultural exchanges and cooperation across the Taiwan Strait.
It is essential to safeguard and strengthen the stability and harmony of Hong Kong and Macao, he said.
Wang stressed the importance of adhering to the one-China principle and the 1992 Consensus, firmly opposing "Taiwan independence" separatist activities and external interference, and resolutely upholding the victorious outcome of the recovery of Taiwan in the war against Japanese aggression.
He also called for efforts to uphold a correct historical perspective on WWII and contribute to world peace and development, and the progress of human civilization.
