Shen Yueyue, vice-chairwoman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), and Wang Guangqian, vice-chairman of the CPPCC National Committee and executive vice-chairman of the Central Committee of the China Democratic League, conducted a study survey at the China South-to-North Water Diversion Corporation in Beijing on Aug 29, focusing on advancing the high-quality development of the South-to-North Water Diversion Project.
During the survey, Shen and Wang visited the project exhibition hall, the large-scale equipment display area and other sites. They later joined other CPPCC members and company executives for a symposium to hear work reports and exchange views.
The CPPCC members noted that since the 18th National Congress of the Communist Party of China (CPC) in 2012, the CPC Central Committee has advanced a holistic water governance strategy of prioritizing water conservation, balancing spatial distribution, taking systematic approaches and giving full play to the roles of both the government and market. It was highlighted that the South-to-North Water Diversion Project is a matter of strategic importance, long-term development and people's well-being. It has become central to building a national water network that secures water security for China's modernization drive.
They stressed the need to align thinking and action with the decisions and deployments of the CPC Central Committee. They called for goal-oriented and problem-oriented approaches, deeper research into the new circumstances, tasks and challenges facing the project, and constructive policy proposals to address difficulties and bottlenecks, so as to contribute wisdom and strengthen to its high-quality development.
The CPPCC's role in advancing ecological and environmental protection, improving governance on emerging pollutants, accelerating the shift toward green and low-carbon lifestyles, supporting the carbon peaking process and fostering a new energy system was highlighted at the symposium. Such efforts, they said, will contribute to China's green transition and the vision of a Beautiful China during the 15th Five-Year Plan period (2026-30).
