The 14th National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) held its 24th briefing session on issues of major concern in Beijing on May 14, focusing on speeding up the planning and development of a new energy system. Shen Yueyue and Wang Guangqian, vice-chairpersons of the CPPCC National Committee, attended the meeting.
Wan Jinsong, deputy head of the National Energy Administration (NEA), gave a briefing on related work. He noted that the establishment of a new energy system is of strategic significance to national security and development. In recent years, China has accelerated the development of the new energy system, achieving preliminary results in green and low-carbon energy transitions, energy security safeguards, innovation in energy technology and industry, energy system reforms, and international energy cooperation.
Looking ahead, the NEA will focus on the two primary tasks of ensuring energy security and facilitating a low-carbon transition, and continue to advance the building of a new energy system in terms of building a resilient energy security pattern, coordinating transformation of energy production and consumption, optimizing energy production layouts, accelerating the development of new quality productive forces in the energy sector, and improving institutional guarantees for high-quality energy development, Wan added.
During the meeting, CPPCC members and experts held discussions with relevant department officials on several key topics, including balancing development of traditional and new energy, fully tapping the supporting role of the coal sector in energy security, boosting the capacity to absorb electricity generated from new energy sources, empowering the new energy industry with artificial intelligence, enhancing grid safety, and deepening energy and power system reforms.
