A team of non-Communist Party of China members from the Committee on Population, Resources, and Environment of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) National Committee visited Northwest China's Ningxia Hui autonomous region from April 21 to 25 to survey local efforts on water conservation. Wang Guangqian, vice-chairman of the CPPCC National Committee, led the team.
The team visited the cities of Yinchuan, Zhongwei and Wuzhong, conducting surveys at universities, modern agricultural industrial parks, chemical industrial parks, solar power bases in desert areas, as well as water conservation projects such as the Yellow River diversion project. They engaged with both urban and rural residents to gain an in-depth understanding of Ningxia's efforts in building a water-saving society. The team also held discussions with officials from relevant departments, experts, scholars, and enterprise representatives, gathering a wide array of opinions and suggestions.
Lauding the progress Ningxia has made from its innovative practices in water governance during the 14th Five-Year Plan (2021-25) period, the team emphasized that building a water-saving society is crucial for ensuring the sustainable development of the Chinese nation, driving high-quality economic and social growth, and facilitating the green transformation of China's development paradigm. It is also an ultimate requirement for building a civilized society with green lifestyles and consumption patterns, they noted.
They highlighted the need for a comprehensive approach to water conservation, focusing on fine-tuned management throughout the entire water utilization process, from the source to the final consumption stage, so as to enhance the efficiency of water resource utilization. Efforts should be made to mobilize the various sectors of society to participate in water conservation and increase public awareness across all segments of society, they said.
The team also called on the CPPCC to play its role as a specialized consultative body by strengthening ideological and political guidance, fostering broad consensus, and contributing to the building of a water-saving society.
