The Peking Opera and Kunqu Opera office of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) held a work symposium in Beijing on April 1. The meeting studied the guiding principles of the latest sessions of the National People's Congress and the CPPCC National Committee and set out work plans.
Jiang Xinzhi, vice-chairman of the CPPCC National Committee and director of the Peking Opera and Kunqu Opera office, addressed the meeting.
Jiang said that since its establishment in 1986, the office has played a key role in the revitalization of Peking and Kunqu operas, as well as in the inheritance and development of other regional operatic art forms. Since the 18th National Congress of the Communist Party of China (CPC) in 2012, the office has focused on strengthening ideological and political guidance while fostering broad consensus. By promoting positive values through opera performances, it has made significant contributions to the prosperity of Chinese opera in the new era, he said.
Jiang emphasized the need to uphold the CPC’s overall leadership and closely follow the CPC Central Committee in ideological and political stance and in practice. He urged continuous enhancement of political awareness, responsibility, and competence to ensure the correct political orientation of work.
He also underscored the importance of cultural confidence, highlighting the role of opera in preserving China's historical and cultural heritage and developing socialist culture. He called for a people-centered approach that aligns with contemporary trends and public needs while fostering innovation in opera creation. By amplifying the voices of the new era, telling China's story through opera, and promoting cultural exchanges, the office aims to contribute to the country's cultural prosperity, building up China's cultural strength, and developing a modern Chinese civilization, he said.
