The National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) held a teleseminar on improving the public service system for sports and fitness in Beijing on March 28. Wang Huning, chairman of the CPPCC National Committee, presided over the meeting.

Wang, also a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, said that since the 18th CPC National Congress in 2012, the CPC Central Committee has prioritized public health and advanced the building of a strong country in sports and a Healthy China while implementing the fitness-for-all strategy, which has seen booming development of public sports in the country. He called on CPPCC members to thoroughly study the CPC Central Committee's decisions on enhancing the public service system for sports and fitness to ensure the provision of targeted and effective proposals.

Wang urged CPPCC members to conduct in-depth research on key aspects of the development of the public service system for fitness and physical activity and provide consultation on better leveraging the values and functions of nationwide fitness in enhancing public health, promoting well-rounded development for all and economic and social progress, as well as demonstrating China's cultural strength.

Efforts are needed to utilize proposals and reports on social conditions and public opinions to address public concerns in this area such as the need for public sports venues and facilities, so that decisions of the CPC Central Committee in this regard can be better implemented, he said.

He also called on CPPCC members to leverage their expertise and participate in CPPCC initiatives such as "serving the people," "bringing sports to communities", and "champions classroom", and CPPCC-affiliated media to promote fitness awareness among the public with more publicity on fitness and physical exercise.

During the meeting, nine CPPCC National Committee members and two experts shared their insights onsite or via video link. They proposed accelerating the revision and implementation of the Regulations on National Fitness, improving industry standards and governance, and building a public fitness service system that aligns with regional demographic changes, urban-rural integration, and technological innovation. They stressed the need for ensuring equitable access to basic public fitness services across regions, and leveraging digital technology to improve service accessibility and precision. They also called for deeper integration of sports with culture and tourism to vitalize grassroots sports events, and continuously stimulate market and social engagement in fitness activities.

CPPCC National Committee vice-chairpersons Hu Chunhua, Shen Yueyue, Chen Wu, Mu Hong, Wang Dongfeng and Jiang Zuojun all attended the meeting, while officials from the National Development and Reform Commission, the Ministry of Finance, and the General Administration of Sport provided briefings on relevant issues and engaged in discussions with CPPCC members.
