The Fujian Provincial Health Commission and GX Foundation, a Hong Kong-based Chinese medical humanitarian aid charitable organization, recently signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) on cooperation on cataract eradication projects in Senegal. The signing ceremony took place in Fuzhou, East China's Fujian province. 

Leung Chun-ying, vice-chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference and chairman of GX Foundation, addressed the ceremony. 

Leung noted that 2025 marks the 50th anniversary of medical aid of Fujian province to Senegal. Over the past five decades, with strong support from the Communist Party of China Fujian Provincial Committee and Fujian Provincial Government, Fujian has assembled high-caliber medical teams to provide assistance in Senegal, significantly improving local healthcare level and enhancing the friendship between people of the two countries. 

He expressed hope that both sides will take the MOU renewal as an opportunity to deepen exchanges and coordination, and continue to advance Fujian-Hong Kong collaboration in international medical assistance and Belt and Road health cooperation. He called on medical aid workers to bring tangible benefits to local patients with their expertise and kindness, tell China's stories through their own actions, and contribute to the building of a global community of health for all. 

The collaboration between the Fujian Provincial Health Commission and GX Foundation on cataract eradication in Senegal began in November 2022 with the signing of the initial MOU. 

Since October 2023, Fujian has dispatched six medical teams to Fatick, Senegal, conducting eye examinations for over 5,400 people and successful cataract surgeries for more than 3,300 people free of charge. 

With the renewed MOU, the foundation and Fujian medical teams will continue to provide free surgeries for cataract patients in Senegal.
