Shanghai Macao Association established

To promote closer cooperation between Shanghai and the Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR) and respond to the aspirations of Macao compatriots living in Shanghai, the Shanghai Macao Association was launched in the municipality on Nov 28, on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of Macao's return to the motherland.

Shanghai and Macao enjoy close ties and frequent exchanges, with a dedicated Shanghai-Macao cooperation conference mechanism in place, yielding fruitful collaborative achievements. Macao compatriots in Shanghai have actively engaged in the city's economic and social development, and have made significant contributions to the country's reform, opening-up and modernization efforts.

Attendees at the launch agreed that the establishment of the Shanghai Macao Association reflects the common aspirations of Macao compatriots in Shanghai, as well as the collaborative efforts of various sectors in both regions. The association will uphold the patriotic tradition, unite more Macao compatriots in Shanghai, and promote mutual progress and win-win cooperation between the two regions.

Ho Hau Wah, vice-chairman of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference National Committee, Chen Tong, a member of the Standing Committee of the Shanghai Municipal Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) and head of the United Front Work Department of the CPC Shanghai Municipal Committee, and relevant officials from the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the Macao SAR and the United Front Work Department of the CPC Central Committee jointly unveiled the Shanghai Macao Association.

Feng Yi was elected as the first president of the association. Nearly 300 representatives from various sectors in Shanghai and Macao attended the event.
