A team from the Committee on Social and Legal Affairs of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) National Committee visited Southwest China's Yunnan province from Oct 28 to Nov 1 to survey local work on grassroots social governance, part of the thematic survey on strengthening and innovating grassroots social governance in border areas. He Baoxiang, vice-chairman of the CPPCC National Committee and executive vice-chairman of the Central Committee of the Revolutionary Committee of the Chinese Kuomintang, led the team.
The team visited courts, border checkpoints, joint defense stations, communities and village groups in Kunming city, Wenshan Zhuang and Miao autonomous prefecture, and Honghe Hani and Yi autonomous prefecture. They talked with local officials, community members, business representatives and scholars to gain an in-depth understanding of local economic and social development, grassroots governance, and efforts to promote ethnic unity and progress.
The team also held a meeting in Kunming, where they exchanged views with representatives from relevant departments, gathering opinions and suggestions.
Noting that Yunnan is a key border province in China, the team said it has made significant strides in strengthening grassroots organizational capacity, establishing effective governance mechanisms and enhancing border security through pragmatic initiatives.
The team emphasized the overall leadership of the Communist Party of China over grassroots governance in border areas, and the need to take into consideration local conditions and resources in local development endeavors. They called for coordinated efforts by the Party, government, military, police and local residents to bolster security and collective defense.
It is also essential to strengthen the pool of grassroots governance talent and enhance the capacity of local officials to manage community affairs and resolve conflicts, the team said, underscoring the need to foster the sense of community for the Chinese nation, thereby reinforcing collective strength to safeguard the nation’s borders.
