A team from the Committee on Economic Affairs of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference National Committee visited East China's Jiangxi province from Oct 20 to 23 to survey work on the recycling of new energy vehicle (NEV) batteries.

The team visited related enterprises in the cities of Ganzhou, Xinyu, Yichun and Nanchang to gain insights into current practices in power battery decommissioning management, echelon utilization, and recycling processes. They also held discussions with heads of Jiangxi's relevant departments, experts, scholars and representatives from leading enterprises to gather opinions and suggestions.

The team emphasized that effective recycling of NEV power batteries is a key measure in advancing green economic and social development, which is essential for enhancing the security of industrial and supply chains and green competitiveness. In recent years, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, together with relevant departments, has advanced planning for building a recycling industrial chain of power battery material production, manufacturing, dismantling, echelon utilization and recycling, greatly contributing to reducing dependence on foreign resources and enhancing the resilience of industrial and supply chains, they said.

The team noted the importance of preparing for the large-scale decommissioning of EV power batteries. Efforts are needed to fully tap the respective advantages of power battery and automobile production enterprises, and mobilize the enthusiasm of consumers as well as enterprises engaged in recycling and dismantling, comprehensive utilization, battery leasing, warehousing and logistics, and renewable resource recycling, to accelerate the establishment and improvement of power battery recycling and utilization systems, they added. 

The team also underscored the need to streamline channels for importing dismantled battery materials to ensure that resources can circulate effectively.

Furthermore, they recommended an increase of supportive financial and tax policies, as well as improved policies on industrial development and supervision so as to ensure energy supply for the country and the high-quality development of the power battery sector.
