The Central Committee of the Jiusan Society dispatched a team headed by its chairman Wu Weihua to Southwest China's Sichuan province from June 19 to 23 to conduct a survey on democratic supervision of the environmental protection of the Yangtze River.

The team visited Leshan city and the Sichuan section of the Lugu Lake in Liangshan Yi autonomous prefecture to look into the environmental protection of the shorelines of the Dadu, Minjiang and Qingyi rivers. They also learned about the development of the crystalline silicon photovoltaic industry (the generation of power from sunlight), the withdrawal of chemical-industrial companies from shoreline areas, the prevention and control of agricultural non-point source pollution (pollution caused by rainwater or snowmelt spreading toxins as it moves through the land), the promotion of eco-environment-oriented development demonstration projects, as well as work on biodiversity and environmental protection.

Wu, also an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, highlighted the significance of democratic supervision of the eco-environmental protection of the Yangtze River. He said that democratic supervision is a vital component of China's whole-process people's democracy and is expected to help provinces and cities along the Yangtze River Economic Belt to advance communication and cooperation and form joint forces for protecting the region's environment.

Wu said that the Jiusan Society will turn its attention to the study of prominent long-term eco-environmental problems in the Sichuan section of the Yangtze River Basin, such as cross-provincial collaborative protection and restoration of plateau lakes, comprehensive treatment of small watershed environments and restoration of aquatic biological channels, as well as treatment of historical residual solid wastes.

The organization is ready to leverage the role of science and technology in supporting environmental protection, he added, while continuing to ensure democratic supervision of the Yangtze River’s protection, to better facilitate high-quality development of the Yangtze River Economic Belt.
