Chen Wu, vice-chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), led a team from the Committee on Education, Science, Health and Sports of the CPPCC National Committee to survey science education in primary and secondary schools in East China's Shandong province from June 18 to 21. 

During their trips in the province's cities of Qingdao, Yantai, and Weihai, the team visited primary and secondary schools, science and technology museums, research institutes, and science popularization units. They listened to reports on reforming science teaching practices, improving curriculum and textbook systems, capacity building of teaching staff, and mobilizing societal resources. The team held in-depth exchanges with teachers, students and science education workers. 

Noting that strengthening science education in primary and secondary schools is crucial not only for the healthy growth of students but also for building China into a strong nation in education, science and technology, and talents, the team called for further improvements to the curriculum, the revision of textbooks, the enhancement in teaching methods, and the incubation of a high-quality team of general science teachers, as well as the effective utilization of social resources. These efforts aim to improve students' scientific literacy and to cultivate more young people with the potential to become scientists and a willingness to dedicate themselves to scientific research. 

The team also called for fully tapping the CPPCC's unique advantage of having a pool of diversified talents, intellectual resources, and extensive connections to proactively offer suggestions and consultations on improving science education in primary and secondary schools. CPPCC members should also play an active role in their work to contribute to the improvement of young people's scientific literacy, the team added.
