The Central Committee of the Chinese Peasants and Workers Democratic Party (CPWDP) sent a team to East China's Shanghai and Jiangsu province from Oct 20 to 26, to conduct a democratic supervision survey on the protection of the Yangtze River's ecological environment.
During the survey, at symposiums held in Shanghai and Jiangsu's capital city Nanjing, respectively, Yang Zhen, vice-chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference and executive vice-chairman of the CPWDP Central Committee, fully acknowledged the two regions' joint and persistent efforts and achievements in safeguarding the ecological system of the Yangtze River, saying that their problem-solving and goal-oriented approaches have promoted the high-quality development of the Yangtze River Economic Belt.
Yang stressed the importance and urgency of preserving the Yangtze River, and called for stronger measures to protect drinking water sources, upgrade the collection and disposal capacity of urban domestic sewage, accelerate environmental infrastructure construction, and enhance the treatment of diffused pollution in rural areas to ensure the sustainable development of the agricultural sector.
Further efforts should be made to facilitate the green and low-carbon transformation of economic and social development, improve the ecological compensation mechanism and build a cross-regional cooperation mechanism for upstream and downstream areas along the Yangtze River, Yang said, adding that he hopes that Shanghai and Jiangsu will continue to enhance their coordination mechanism, fully leverage the role of investigation and maintain scientific supervision, so as to fully implement the country's new development philosophy.
