The Central Committee of the China Association for Promoting Democracy (CAPD) and the Ye Shengtao Research Association of China jointly hosted the 2023 cross-Strait and Hong Kong-Macao exchange activity of basic education in Sanming, East China's Fujian province, on July 26, aiming to promote disciplinary reading and writing among primary and secondary school students.
Zhu Yongxin, vice-chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference and executive vice-chairman of the CAPD Central Committee, said at the opening meeting that the reading level of individuals determines their spiritual level and even that of a nation. Reading and writing, which complement each other, are essential to a person's growth.
He added that subject reading, especially interdisciplinary reading, is an important way to broaden one's reading horizon, develop reading habits, enhance reading interest, and promote interdisciplinary knowledge integration. In conjunction with it, disciplinary writing is a driving force for connecting knowledge, promoting thinking, deepening understanding, and strengthening application of knowledge.
Zhu noted that there is an obvious tendency that the reading of primary and secondary school students focuses too much on language study while a large number of other subjects are ignored, which is not conducive to improving the comprehensive quality of students. He called on the schools and the whole society to advocate and support disciplinary reading and writing as a way of life, a pattern of individual growth, and a means of creativity.
He called on professionals and experts to make full exchanges during the event and contribute to the development of basic education on both sides of the Taiwan Strait as well asin Hong Kong and Macao.
