A project on the building of national reading standardization was launched at the National Library of China in Beijing on May 30.

Zhu Yongxin, vice-chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) and executive vice-chairman of the Central Committee of the China Association for Promoting Democracy (CAPD), delivered a speech via video link.

Zhu pointed out that the construction of scientific and systematic reading standards at the national level is of great significance to stimulate more people to read, cultivate good reading habits, improve their reading literacy, and deepen national reading activities so as to build a learning society.

He stressed that more efforts should be made to build a national reading standard that is both of a global level and with Chinese characteristics, to compile a national reading library that is people-oriented and open to all citizens, and to develop a scientific, concise and practical national reading assessment system so that more people fall in love with reading.
