A conference on the work of the committees on social and legal affairs of the local committees of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) across the country was held via video link on Dec 13.

The conference aimed to study and implement the guiding principles of the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China (CPC), sum up the innovative achievements and systematic understanding of the committees on social and legal affairs in 2022 and over the past five years, and map out future work to break new ground.

In his speech at the conference, Chen Xiaoguang, vice-chairman of the National Committee of the CPPCC, fully acknowledged the work of the committees on social and legal affairs of the National Committee and local committees of the CPPCC over the past five years.

He said that the committees on social and legal affairs followed the overall leadership of the Party, strengthened theoretical and political guidance, positioned their development orientation in making proposals for and forging consensus on State affairs, gave full play to their advantages, helped solve key and difficult problems in social affairs and legal building, adhered to creative development approaches, expanded work arenas and channels with a pioneering spirit, conducted colorful political consultative activities, promoted economic and social development, and advanced the cause of the CPPCC over the past five years.

Chen stressed that the 20th CPC National Congress had special discourses on the political consultative functions of the CPPCC and its role in improving the livelihoods of the people and advancing the rule of law in China, charting a course and providing fundamental guidance for the work of the committees on social and legal affairs. He called on the committees on social and legal affairs to ensure the full implementation of strategic decisions of the 20th CPC National Congress and fulfil their duties with a high sense of political responsibility and mission, raise personal awareness in both thinking and action, grasp a full understanding of new thought, judgment, decisions and requirements, further enhance the functions of political consultation, deepen the level of political consultation, fully express public views, forge consensus among the people, step up efforts to shore up weak links, and improve the systems of democratic supervision and connecting CPPCC members and the people.
