Wan Gang, vice-chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), called for greater efforts to realize China's carbon peak and carbon neutrality goals during a symposium on advancing the revolution of green science and technology, strengthening coordinated regional development, and enhancing international exchanges and cooperation.

The Committee on Education, Science, Health and Sport of the CPPCC National Committee held the virtual meeting in Beijing on June 1. Officials from East China's Anhui province and Southwest China's Yunnan province attended via video link.

Wan, also chairman of the Central Committee of the China Zhi Gong Party and president of the China Association for Science and Technology, hailed the "dual carbon" goals - peaking carbon dioxide emissions before 2030 and reaching carbon neutrality before 2060 - as intrinsic requirements for China's own sustainable development and a solemn commitment to the vision of building a community with a shared future for mankind.

He said more efforts are needed to strengthen synergy between economic development and environmental protection, consciously fight the tough battle against pollution, and establish a modern environmental governance system.

It's necessary to push forward both demand-side and supply-side reforms in the energy sector, integrate the development of new energy with fossil fuel consumption, and step up support for technology innovation and application for eco-friendly growth, according to Wan.

He also stressed the importance of training high-caliber talents and interdisciplinary professionals to bolster China's shift to low-carbon development.
