A survey team led by Wang Yongqing, vice-chairman of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) National Committee, collected views and suggestions on the planned revision of the Arbitration Law via video link with government officials, heads of arbitration agencies, judges, legal scholars, lawyers and business representatives in Beijing, Shanghai and Shenzhen from March 21 to 23.

Wang said China has seen great progress in arbitration development and its increasing role in economic and social development ever since the law took effect over 20 years ago. While hailing the strides and innovative practices made in the three regions, Wang called for more efforts to give full play to the strengths and functions of China's arbitration system, as well as the need to improve the credibility of this dispute resolution method.

More efforts are needed to incorporate an international perspective, summarize innovative arbitration practices, and conduct in-depth research of measures and systems to boost arbitration credibility, according to Wang.

The research priorities include bringing into life the policy guidance of a preference of arbitration over litigation, the management and supervision of arbitrators and capacity-building, and the fostering of world-class arbitration institutions, Wang said.

The research is part of efforts to prepare for a biweekly consultative seminar on the law's revision scheduled for May.
