The leading group on democratic supervision of the Yangtze River ecological and environmental protection, a taskforce under the Central Committee of the China Association for Promoting Democracy (CAPD), held a meeting in Beijing on March 14.

Cai Dafeng, vice-chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress, chairman of the CAPD Central Committee, and head of the leading group, presided over the meeting. Liu Xincheng, vice-chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), executive vice-chairman of the CAPD Central Committee and deputy head of the leading group, attended the meeting.

Cai recognized the progress made in supervision work last year and called for further improving its quality.

Cai said it's important to advance the implementation of decisions and plans by the CPC Central Committee and the State Council, keep in mind the overall situation and development priorities of Jiangxi province, and build consensus to ensure smooth progress.

In stressing careful planning, clear prioritizing and efficient organizing of supervision work over a span of five years, Cai urged the CAPD Jiangxi Provincial Committee to play an active role in communication and deeply understand the people's concerns and opinions. Meanwhile, special committees should be encouraged to carry out follow-up studies and research by leveraging their expertise.

The supervision of the river's environmental protection also needs to proceed with in-depth understanding of complex issues, broad consensus on problems, causes and solutions, and the promotion of joint response of the central and local governments.
