A team led by Chen Xiaoguang, vice-chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), visited Central China's Hunan province to survey elderly-oriented renovations of public facilities and services from Oct 11 to 14.
The team visited neighborhoods, government service centers, nursing homes, and public transportation stations in cities including Zhuzhou, Xiangtan and Changsha to learn about measures taken to improve elderly accessibility and collect opinions. During these visits, they also communicated with officials from the provincial government.
Chen, also executive vice-chairman of the Central Committee of the China Democratic League, hailed Hunan's progress in adopting proactive and innovative practices that provide better care for senior citizens.
He said making age-appropriate renewal a key part of China's response to the aging population will require long-term commitment and substantial investment.
It's necessary to enhance top-level design, take a holistic approach to planning, establish unified standards and norms for renovations, experiment with diversified market-based investment, and encourage the private sector to join the initiative, Chen said.
In line with the 14th Five-Year Plan (2021-25), the Committee on Social and Legal Affairs of the CPPCC National Committee will inspect undertakings designed to help the elderly live better and more happily for five consecutive years.
