He Wei, vice-chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), attended a meeting on publicizing assessment reports given by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) in Beijing on Sept 27.
The meeting was jointly organized by the Committee on Population, Resources and Environment of the CPPCC National Committee and the China Meteorological Administration.
In the meeting, Yu Rucong, a member of the Standing Committee of the CPPCC National Committee and deputy director of the China Meteorological Administration, said China has been an advocate, contributor and enforcer of international climate change assessments, and was one of the first countries to participate in the preparation of the IPCC's assessment reports. The country has played an active and constructive role in the reports' writing and relevant procedural reforms over a span of more than 30 years.
IPCC Working Group I Co-Chair Zhai Panmao, also a research fellow with the Chinese Academy of Meteorological Sciences, made a presentation on the latest knowledge on the science of climate change.
Li Wei, director of the Committee on Population, Resources and Environment, said the meeting would help CPPCC members better understand the research results on climate change, especially China's long-term commitment to the international community on addressing climate change and the significant achievements it has made. It would also help CPPCC members make targeted suggestions on how to realize the country's goal of peaking carbon dioxide emissions before 2030 and achieving carbon neutrality before 2060, improve its democratic supervision, and contribute to consensus building on promoting green development and adopting low-carbon lifestyles in China.
It was the second time the two sides had jointly organized a presentation on the response to climate change, with the first being in 2013 on "Global Warming and Response Actions".
