Each of the four routes set four points, asking team members to accomplish various tasks to continue the journey. Whether role playing, riddles, recitation assignments or pathfinding, the tasks were all related to the history of the Party, and called on younger generations to carry on the spirit of the May Fourth Movement, a patriotic campaign launched by Chinese young people in 1919 against imperialism and feudalism.

The relay activity selected 16 venues with revolutionary spirit or Shanghai landmarks across the six districts of Huangpu, Jing'an, Hongkou, Xuhui, Pudong New Area and Yangpu.
