A research team led by Liu Qibao, vice-chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), visited Yuanmingyuan Park in Beijing, also known as the Old Summer Palace, on June 10, with the aim of better preserving immovable cultural relics.
The team, made up of members of the CPPCC National Committee, visited the ruins of Danhuai Hall and Hanjing Hall as well as the Dagongmen archaeological site. They then held a meeting with officials from the Beijing Municipal Administration of Cultural Heritage and scholars to exchange ideas about the renovation and maintenance of cultural relics.
Liu said it's necessary to encourage economic and social development alongside the preservation of cultural heritage, an invaluable asset in terms of Chinese civilization, history and national spirit. More efforts should be made to protect immovable cultural relics for their unique value, and this includes developing a full picture of their locations, characteristics and current status, he added.
The top priority is to preserve relics in well-planned, organized and scientific ways, and then improve their display in order to enliven their legacies, said Liu, adding that this endeavor needs both policy support and targeted measures in line with the particular conditions of immovable cultural relics.
