Wan Gang, vice-chairman of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) National Committee, led a survey team to Changsha and Zhuzhou of Central China's Hunan province from April 14 to 16.
The mission of the survey team, whose members are from the Committee on Education, Science, Health and Sport of the CPPCC National Committee, was to accelerate the launch of new national key scientific and technological projects in key areas.
Wan recognized the contribution Hunan has made in organizing and implementing national key projects, particularly in the construction of a science and technology innovation base with the Changsha-Zhuzhou-Xiangtan National Independent Innovation Demonstration Zone at its core.
He emphasized that establishing and implementing national key scientific and technological projects is conducive to the exploration of a new-type system that pool and allocate resources of the whole country to key national undertakings.
He urged development of innovative thinking and making self-reliance in science and technology the strategic underpinning for national development. Scientific and technological resources should be focused on key areas in order to build safer and more reliable industrial and supply chains and to ensure smooth domestic circulation and gain new advantages in international markets.
He also called for integrated development of fundamental and applied research and industrialization, emphasizing that some core technologies still need to be acquired to facilitate the high-quality development and building of a new development paradigm.
The team also visited key academic institutions, universities and enterprises including the China National Hybrid Rice R&D Center, China Railway Construction Heavy Industry Corporation, the Third Xiangya Hospital of Central South University, and Hunan University during the survey tour.
