Guo Yuanyuan, a member of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), said the committee's reading events have helped her gain new knowledge and perspectives that improve her capability to fulfill duties as a CPPCC member.

Members of the CPPCC National Committee piloted the reading program on Feb 20, 2020 with the launch of a reading group on the theme of COVID-19 responses. Then on April 23, the program officially started and expanded to 12 reading groups.

Guo, also deputy dean of the School of Culture and Communication, Capital University of Economics and Business, said she joined 30 reading groups in the initiative, took part in eight offline studies and reading activities in-person, and introduced charters in four books.

Reading helps learn about new fields, expand the sphere of knowledge, and deepen understanding of scientific and technological progress so CPPCC members can improve political consultation, said Guo.

She also said her proposal of improving management of social media platforms was inspired by such reading activities, which enabled her to gain critical insights into the production and spread of online information as well as its potential consequences.
