The Civil Code study group of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) held a symposium on Jan 15 which was attended by over 40 CPPCC members, either in person or via video link.

Wang Liming, vice-chairman of the China Law Society and deputy head of the Civil Code compilation project leading group, delivered a report at the event instructing the CPPCC members on how to study the code.

Wang Yongqing, vice-chairman of the CPPCC National Committee, delivered a speech at the symposium, pointing out that the Civil Code is an encyclopedia guiding people's social life and work and the study group members have made noticeable progress in its study.

CPPCC members should deepen their study of the code, take the lead in its implementation, and better apply what they've learnt from their study to their political consultation work, Wang said.

He stressed that reading activities play a fundamental role in improving the quality of the CPPCC's political consultation, and require long-term efforts. More efforts should be made to accurately capture the concerns and needs of CPPCC members, continuously improve the appeal of reading groups, and facilitate discussions where members can speak their minds.

He added that reading activities should be combined with political consultation to improve CPPCC members' performance of their duties.
