The Committee on Social and Legal Affairs of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) and the China Law Society held a seminar to promote innovative urban social governance on Nov 19 in Beijing.

Chen Xiaoguang, vice-chairman of the CPPCC National Committee and executive vice-chairman of the Central Committee of the Chinese Democratic League, urged CPPCC organizations at all levels to fully fulfill their duties as dedicated consultation bodies and offer their suggestion on the innovation of urban social governance.

He called for a problem-oriented manner and target-driven approach to modernize social governance in cities and suggested transforming the institutional advantages of the CPPCC system into duty performance requirements to improve the efficiency of social governance and to unite people from various participating groups and sectors in innovative social governance.

Chen stressed that the problems and risks in social governance should be controlled and solved within cities, thus laying a solid foundation for safety throughout the whole nation.

The CPPCC organizations have instituted multiple consultation forms on various platforms to collect advice, prevent and resolve disputes, and build consensuses, according to Chen.

In his speech, Chen spoke highly of the efforts made by CPPCC organizations at all levels to explore innovative ways to improve governance, such as organizing CPPCC members to offer consultation and dispute resolution in grassroots settings.

Chen said more measures will be put in place to better connect and serve people from different sectors.

He also required the CPPCC and its members to play their irreplaceable parts in innovating social governance in cities.
