He Wei affirms national parks’ role in natural resources protection

He Wei, vice-chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) and executive vice-chairman of  the Central Committee of the Chinese Peasants and Workers Democratic Party, called for building national parks featuring socialism with Chinese characteristics at a recent meeting.

He made the remarks after leading an inspection team themed on national park system pilot projects construction from the Committee on Population, Resources and Environment of the CPPCC National Committee on an inspection of the Northeast China Tiger and Leopard National Park in Jilin province, Oct 24-28. 

He opposed indiscriminately adopting foreign practices in building national parks, added that the piloting process is actually a process to identify, research and solve problems. 

He proposed to define the role and fundamental purpose of the national park featuring socialism with Chinese characteristics, innovate management system and mechanism and strive for a high degree of cooperation between the central and local governments in park management. 

He called for a balance between protection and development, the partial and overall situation, current development and sustainable growth in the future. 

He said efforts should be made to help locals escape poverty and to enhance economic and social development while maintaining the stability of the border areas and boosting border trade and national unity so as to realize win-win protection and development through unified and standardized governance.
