The Committee on Education, Science, Health and Sport of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) organized CPPCC members, scholars and experts in medical field, and pharmaceutical enterprises to offer voluntary health services in Northwest China's Gansu province from Oct 20 to 23.
They provided free clinic services and health lectures in Lanzhou, the provincial capital of Gansu, Linxia Hui autonomous region, and Gannan Tibetan autonomous prefecture.
Medicines and medical equipment worth about 4 million yuan ($610,000) were donated to grassroots medical institutions, where the experts also surveyed the prevention and treatment of chronic diseases.
In addition, they visited local people in pastoral areas to help eradicate neglected diseases that thrive in poverty.
Cong Bing, permanent vice-chairman of the Committee on Education, Science, Health and Sport, and vice-chairman Sun Xianze attended the activities.
Initiated in the 1990s, such voluntary activities are held every year and have become a signature of the committee.
Over the past two decades, the committee has brought health knowledge, cutting-edge technologies and reliable medicines to grassroots areas, particularly in revolutionary bases, ethnic communities, and border and poverty-stricken areas.
