Li Bin chairs 25th PPD Annual Board Meeting via video link

China is willing to share its experience in COVID-19 prevention and control with the international community and collaborate with other countries to fight against the pandemic, said Li Bin, vice-chairwoman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), at the 25th Annual Board Meeting of the Partners in Population and Development (PPD), an inter-governmental organization for promoting South-South cooperation, which was held via video link on Oct 16.

Li, who is also chairwoman of the board meeting, chaired the conference. More than 100 people participated, including Isatou Touray, vice-president of Gambia, Lindiwe Zulu, minister of small business development of South Africa, and Bangladeshi Health Minister Zahed Maleque, as well as representatives of the organization's member countries.

Li introduced the significant strategic achievements China has made in its fight against the COVID-19 pandemic and expressed China's willingness to share its experience in epidemic control with the international community including other PPD member countries in an effort to promote the building of a shared community of health for mankind.

China will continue to champion multilateralism and support the World Health Organization's leading role in coordinating the global response to public health emergencies, said Li.

Li reviewed the major achievements China has made as the holder of PPD presidency during the past six years and called on member countries to fulfill their political commitments in population and development, deepen South-South cooperation and enhance the PPD's influence. 

She also encouraged all member countries to consistently contribute to the realization of the Program of Action of the International Conference on Population and Development that was passed in 1994 and the United Nation's 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

The participants spoke highly of China's contributions to the PPD as the organization's president and its support for other member states. They said the PPD will champion multilateral cooperation and continue to share experience about COVID-19 prevention and control.

The videoconference unanimously passed a list of members of the PPD executive committee for 2021-23 and adopted the report made by the PPD executive director and the work plan for 2021.

South Africa will take the presidency from China, which will act as the supporting president. Tunisia will act as the secretary general and Indonesia as the cashier. Benin, India, Kenya and Mexico will join the executive committee.
