The Committee on Culture, Historical Data and Studies of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) held a videoconference on the inheritance and development of Chinese operas on Sept 9.

Liu Xincheng, vice-chairperson of the CPPCC National Committee, revealed at the meeting that it took one and a half months to carry out a survey of inheritance and development of Chinese operas.

He said members of the CPPCC National Committee got a better understanding of the current situation and existing problems in inheritance and development of traditional Chinese operas by various means during the survey.

They found that the inheritance and development of Chinese operas has made remarkable achievements, and the overall situation has improved in recent years, he noted.

Liu attributed the achievements to the policies and measures rolled out by the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee to revitalize opera art since the 18th CPC National Congress in 2012, saying that the efforts injected strong impetus into the inheritance and development of traditional opera.

Chinese opera is deeply rooted in the precious character of the nation and the people, which gives it an irreplaceable cultural value and incomparable vitality and helps China build confidence to inherit and develop traditional arts in the new era, he noted.

In his speech, Liu called for a correct understanding of the problems encountered in inheriting and developing Chinese opera and firm confidence. He demanded consensus on effective implementation of national policies and cultivation of a good inheritance and development environment.
