Gu Shengzu, vice-chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference and executive vice-chairman of the Central Committee of the China National Democratic Construction Association, recently drew on a videoconferencing platform to survey the follow-up support for resettled impoverished villagers in Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region and Hebei province.

Gu pointed out that resettlement for poverty relief is a critical step in China's war on poverty and an effective approach to the problem of mismatch between natural endowment and local people's livelihoods in some places.

He said that since the development of resettlements determines the effect of China's targeted poverty relief effort, local governments should take various practical measures to boost the employment and income of the resettled. He called for focusing on developing county-level economies so as to promote local employment of the population.

He also called for developing industries with local features, providing skill training for the resettled, promoting their adaptation to new social and economic environments by improving the resettlement community governance mechanism, safeguarding their rights and interests, and enhancing the linkage between follow-up support for the resettled and the rural revitalization strategy.

Previously, Gu had conducted on-site inspections of resettlements in several parts of the two regions including Baise, Liuzhou and Fengning, and will carry on with an inspection of Hechi in Guangxi.
