The Committee on Social and Legal Affairs of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) held a group session on July 9 to study the Civil Code, which was presided over by Shen Deyong, head of the committee. The session, the first activity of the Civil Code study group of the CPPCC National Committee, was attended by Vice-Chairman of the CPPCC National Committee Wang Yongqing.
Sun Xianzhong, a deputy to the National People's Congress and a research fellow of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, delivered a report at the session. Sun participated in the drafting of the Civil Code.
Sun gave a detailed explanation on how to understand and enforce the Civil Code, and expounded on its great significance. He also shared his learning methods with the meeting participants.
Members of the Committee of Social and Legal Affairs agreed that the Civil Code is a major achievement in the construction of the socialist rule of law in China in the new era. They believed it is necessary to obtain a clear understanding of the great significance and value of the code.
They concluded that studying the code and educating people about it should be combined with their daily work on those issues people care intimately about. They said they will offer suggestions and help build consensus, and also set an example in popularizing and advancing the enforcement of the Civil Code.
